Technological Advantages Of Powder Metallurgy

In the 1930s, the powder metallurgy process successfully manufactured porous oil bearing, with the use of cheap iron powder, powder metallurgy process began to be widely used in automotive, textile and other industrial fields. In recent years, powder metallurgy has gradually become a processing method for manufacturing new materials.

Powder metallurgy has been around for more than 100 years and over the past 25 years has become a recognized quality technology for producing a wide range of high-quality parts. Compared with other metal forming technologies, such as forging and casting, this technology has advantages in material utilization, shape complexity and near-net forming size control, etc. Powder metallurgy is recognized as a green technology due to its nature of promoting sustainable development.

According to the formula, the tensile strength of powder metallurgy parts is between 170~1200MPa, which has the following advantages compared with the traditional parts manufacturing process:

1) the parts are close to the final size, with good finish, which can reduce subsequent processing costs and minimize waste loss;

2) able to produce complex or unique shaped parts that cannot be made by other processes; 3) be able to control the product porosity, so as to meet the product self-lubrication, wear resistance and other requirements. Compared with traditional machining and cutting technology, powder metallurgy can save energy by 60% and material utilization rate is as high as 95%. As an important molding process of additive manufacturing, it has become an important part of made in China 2025.
