Metal injection moulding (MIM) originated from powder injection moulding (PIM) of ceramic spark plugs in 1920s. In the following decades, PIM mainly focused on ceramic injection moulding.


It was not until 1979 that Parmatech's MIM products, which were formed by Wiech et al., won two awards, and then Wiech and Rivers were patented, that PIM began to turn to metal injection molding as the dominant technology.


In the past, due to the lack of suitable powder and raw materials, high price, imperfect knowledge platform, immature technology, short time for people to understand and market acceptance, too long production cycle (including mould manufacturing) and insufficient investment, its development and application were relatively slow.


In order to solve the difficulties of MIM technology and promote the practicality of MIM technology, in the mid-1980s, the United States formulated an advanced powder worker program, which covered 18 topics related to injection moulding. Subsequently, Japan, Germany and other countries also actively carried out MIM development and research.


Wiech founded Witec in 1980. Brunswick entered MIM in 1982 and acquired Witec. Then it gradually registered Omark Industries, Remington Military Products, Rocky Dental and other subsidiaries. In 1986, Nippon Seison introduced Wiech process. In 1990, Israel Metaor 2000 introduced Wiech technology from Parmatech Company and established MIM production line.


With the deepening of MIM research and the development of new binders, flour milling technology and degreasing technology, industrialization has been realized in the early 1990s. After more than 20 years of efforts, MIM has become a new near net forming technology with rapid development and the most promising prospect in the field of international powder metallurgy. It is known as "one of the most popular metal parts forming technology in the world".
