Powder Injection Molding: A Revolution In Manufacturing(3)
Dec 09, 2019

Ceramic injection molding

Ceramic injection molding originated from a hot die-casting technology in the 1920s. It has become the fastest-growing and most widely used ceramic molding technology in the world today. It has the advantages of powder injection molding and has many advantages in technology and process. One of the high-precision and high-efficiency forming methods in the existing ceramic forming technology.

Compared with traditional dry forming technology, CIM has the following advantages:

① The forming process has a high degree of automation, and can produce ceramic components with complex shapes, high dimensional accuracy, and small volumes in large quantities;

② The formed ceramic green body has a dense structure and uniform mass distribution, and the performance after sintering is also superior to traditional shaped products; ③ CIM is a near-net-shape forming process, which produces products with extremely high dimensional accuracy and surface finish No subsequent processing is required (or only a small amount is required), which greatly reduces the production cost. In the traditional forming process, the subsequent dimensional accuracy processing accounts for about 30% of the entire ceramic preparation cost.

With the development of ceramic injection technology, its application scope is becoming more and more extensive. For example, the ceramic watch case in Switzerland is produced by ceramic injection molding technology; Japan uses ceramic injection molding technology to realize the industrialization of zirconia fiber optic connectors; the United States has also introduced ceramic injection The forming technology is used in the production of zirconia hair clippers and silicon oxide engine parts. In the 1980s, Tsinghua University in China used ceramic injection molding to produce precision ceramic products such as zirconia, alumina, and silicon carbide, which are used in fields such as communications, automobiles, and medicine.
