Mim Development

Metal injection molding was first traced to the powder injection molding of ceramic spark plugs that began in the 1920s. For the next few decades, powder injection molding was mainly focused on ceramic injection molding. It was not until 1979 that Wiech et al. formed Parmatech's metal injection molding products to win two awards, and at the time Wiech and Rivers patented, powder injection molding began to shift to metal injection molding.


In the past, due to the lack of suitable powder and raw materials, the price is too high, the knowledge platform is not perfect, the technology is not mature, people understand and market acceptance time is not long, production (including mold manufacturing) cycle is too long, investment is not enough, etc., its development and application are more slow.


In order to solve the difficulties of MIM technology and promote the practical application of MIM technology, in the mid-1980s, the United States developed a high-level powder work plan, which covered 18 topics related to injection molding. Subsequently, Japan, Germany, etc. also actively carried out MIM development research.


In 1980, Wiech formed Witec. In 1982, Brunswick entered the MIM industry and acquired Witec. Later, it gradually registered Omark Industries, Remington Army, Rocky Dental and other subsidiaries. In 1986, Japan's Nippon Seison introduced the Wiech process. In 1990, Israel Metalor2000 introduced the Wiech process technology from Parmatech and established the MIM production line.


With the continuous deepening of MIM research and the continuous development of new binders, milling technology and degreasing technology, industrialization was realized in the early 1990s. After more than 20 years of hard work, MIM has become a new type of near-net forming technology that is developing rapidly and most promising in the international powder metallurgy field. It has been hailed as one of the "hottest metal parts forming technologies in the world".
